Climate

The climate may best be described as subtropical, with average annual rainfall varying between 500 mm and 700 mm. Droughts, floods, frosts and heatwaves, together with unreliable rainfall, are all climatic features that have a major influence on agricultural production throughout the region.

Rainfall is predominantly in summer, with approximately 67% of the total falling in the October to March period. The highest rainfall occurs in the north-east and the lowest in the south-west.
