Historic Win for the Doggies

The Chinchilla Bulldogs A-Grade 2010 team fought their way into the history books on Sunday 29th August, becoming only the second team in the club’s lifetime to take out a premiership undefeated.

A 46-16 victory over the Wallumbilla-Surat Red Bulls in Roma saw the team recreate the greatness of the historic Bulldogs 1990 undefeated side.

An elated skipper, Anthony Horswood, lifted the trophy high and thanked the crowd, while Ryan Wilson was rewarded for his stellar season named the 2010 Roma and District Rugby League A-Grade player.

Bulldogs coach Bill Rackemann said he was very proud of the team.

“It’s awesome, it’s a very satisfying and relieving feeling,” he said.

The victory marks Rackemann’s last season as coach for the A Grade side.

“I think they can definitely do it again next year though, there are plenty of locals who want to play as well as the guys who are from out of town,” he said.

Chinchilla Win in Thriller

The Chinchilla Bulldogs U18 team held off a strong Roma Cities outfit to claim the 2010 premiership undefeated on Sunday 29th August, 34-28.

A clearly relieved coach Scott Samuels congratulated his team.

“To be honest, I wasn’t sure if we could do it,” he said.

“We hadn’t been pushed all season but Cities really put it to us.

“The boys showed their ability and they really dug deep.”

Many of the players, and Samuels, were also part of the U16 premiership winning side last year.

Chinchilla’s Nick Mutch was also rewarded the U18 Roma and District Rugby League Player of the season.

Bears Beat Laidley

The Chinchilla Bears defeated Laidley 4-0 on Sunday 29th August in Toowoomba to proceed to the preliminary final of the Football Toowoomba competition.

In a dominant first half display, the Bears led 3-0 after the first 30 minutes and were not troubled by a Laidley side that finished above them on the ladder after the regular season.

Standouts for the Bears included Mark Johnson, Jeremy Hall and Neil Stevenson, who all had major roles in allowing Chinchilla to play their trademark passing game. Chinchilla now travel to Gatton next week to play South Hawks. A win will see Chinchilla qualify for the Grand Final against Highfields.

Honeybears Scrape Through

The Chinchilla Honeybears have defeated the Dalby Tigers in penalty shootout to go through to the preliminary final. They will next travel to Gatton to face rivals the Laidley Gems, in an attempt to qualify for the Grand Final against Rockville.

Library Builds Bridges

More than 500 students visited the Chinchilla Library last week to celebrate 2010 Book Week.

With an ‘Over the Story Bridge’ theme, library staff turned into bridge builders and held various activities for all year levels from Prep to Year 7.

The younger students were treated to a Three Billy Goats Gruff puppet show, along with the chance to create their own Australian fairytale.

The older students learned about different types of bridges from the stately and long-standing to the weird and wacky.

They then put this new found knowledge into practice and built their own impressive bridges.

Meanwhile, bookings for September school holiday activities held at the library are also being taken now.

These holidays, students will be entertained by a Disney animator who will perform a cartoon and stop-motion video workshop.

To book a place phone 4669 1990.

Drinking Responsibly

Year 10 students from Chinchilla State High School will hopefully think before they drink after attending a special education programme next week.

Organised by the Chinchilla Liquor Accord, the Think the Drink programme will be held at the Chinchilla RSL next week.

Liquor Accord secretary Tony Minnis said the programme promoted responsible drinking.

“We’ll have a number of representatives from the Accord presenting,” he said.

These include publicans, Queensland Health representatives, high school representatives and the Chinchilla Police.

Mr Minnis said the morning would consist of a number of presentations and various exercises such as experiencing inhibited behaviour with beer goggles on, as well as learning what constitutes a standard drink.

The educational programme has been described as a proactive way to educate students to drink responsibly and minimise harm in and around licensed premises.
